Refreshing Parks in Kuching, East Malaysia

Welcome to Head for Kuching site! We are a family who relocated to Kuching, East Malaysia. When people think of Borneo, the vast tropical rainforests often come to mind. However, in Kuching, you can enjoy a life surrounded by greenery even within the city. There are many parks where you can take a stroll or go jogging while immersing yourself in nature.

In this article, we will introduce three parks in Kuching where you can enjoy forest bathing and feel refreshed in nature. From spots loved by locals to those recommended for tourists, experience the natural charm that makes Kuching unique!

MBKS Garden Park

MBKS stands for Majlis Bandaraya Kuching Selatan, the Kuching South City Council, which administers the southern part of the city. The MBKS Garden Park, managed by the council, is a beloved relaxation spot for the locals.

This park offers a natural escape in the city, serving as a place for health-conscious activities, casual strolls, and children’s play.

There is a playground with equipment suitable for young children, and the swings nestled within the forest provide a delightful experience where you can enjoy the breeze while surrounded by greenery.

The park is also equipped with exercise machines, making it a popular spot among the elderly.

At the heart of the park lies a large pond, around which visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk. Facing the pond is a stage used for local events, including the Kuching Festival.

Held annually from late July to mid-August, the Food Festival attracts both locals and tourists with over 300 food stalls, creating a lively atmosphere every night.

Another unique feature of the park is the cat sculptures scattered throughout the area. The name “Kuching” means “cat” in Malay, and fittingly, cat statues can be found all over the city.

These sculptures in the park vary in expressions—some are adorable, while others are slightly eerie! They have become popular photo spots, so be sure to look out for them during your visit. 😻😻😻

Sama Jaya Forest Park

Sama Jaya Forest Park is an urban nature reserve located within Kuching city, preserving one of the few remaining primary jungle ecosystems.

The park features two walking trails—an 870-meter loop and a 1.6-kilometer loop. I walk the 1.6-kilometer course every morning, which takes about 20 minutes per lap.

As you wind through the forest, you can encounter wild plants and insects, experiencing the untamed nature of Borneo. Amazingly, you might even come across monkeys or lizards, adding a sense of adventure to your visit.

While feeding the animals is prohibited, the monkeys are generally non-aggressive. On one occasion, I carefully walked past a group of monkeys—quite a nerve-wracking moment!

Besides the jogging trails, the park also has an observation tower, offering a panoramic view of the vast forest. It’s a peaceful spot where you can relax while overlooking the quiet greenery—definitely worth climbing up for the view.

Taman Perpaduan

Taman Perpaduan means “Unity Park” in Malay, symbolizing the harmony among different ethnic communities. At the entrance, you’ll find a massive sculpture of hands clasped together, representing this unity.

Scattered throughout the park are gazebos reflecting the cultural diversity of Malaysia, including Malay, Chinese, and indigenous designs.

The park is centered around a reservoir, surrounded by lush greenery. A beautiful fountain adds to the serenity, with the sound of water creating a soothing atmosphere.

One of the key features of this park is its varied terrain, which makes for an engaging walk as the scenery changes along the way.

In addition to jogging and strolling, the park is equipped with playgrounds for children.

The play structures, made from materials like tires and stones, provide a fun and creative play experience. Plus, since the playgrounds are shaded under trees, kids can play comfortably without worrying about direct sunlight.

This park is a great spot for visitors of all ages—be sure to check it out!
